Connecting Channels
I've tested both Telegram and WhatsApp; the Telegram channel is more stable and reliable.
After setting up the channel, you can chat with OpenClaw to customize your character, including OpenClaw's personality and communication style.
Setting Up Your Tools
Although OpenClaw has built-in memory and cron capabilities, they're not as stable or reliable as dedicated SaaS services. My personal recommendations are:
- Gmail: Ask OpenClaw to set up Google Cloud credentials for Gmail, Google Calendar, and Google Speech-to-Text services. This requires zero coding—you just need to click the link provided by OpenClaw and parse the returned credentials if needed. Afterward, you can fetch emails and calendars, and have OpenClaw summarize them via chat. Tip: Since OpenClaw sometimes forgets credential paths, explicitly remind it:

Case Study: Managing Kids' Chores
For simple tasks like email checking or task management, you just ask OpenClaw. Here's how I used it to manage chores in my household.
In my home, kids earn game time by doing chores. We track the list on WeChat and update it daily. Every time they complete a chore, I need to calculate their earned game time based on the chore list.
First, I explained the rules to OpenClaw and asked it to generate a workflow:

I then asked OpenClaw to refine the rules and correct some misunderstandings. I also tested edge cases with sample questions:
- "If Jack works for an hour, how much game time does he earn?"
- "If Jack exchanges 10 hours of chores for 1 hour of game time, what's his new balance?"
The result? A complete chore management system backed by a Notion database with automatic history tracking and calculations.
Skills and Extensibility
OpenClaw has a skill system—small plugins that extend its capabilities. I'm still exploring what's possible, but with one simple ask, I built my first custom skill:

Security
OpenClaw cannot guarantee to be completely secure or private. My personal approach:
- Host the gateway on your home network with a strong authentication token
- Use Tailscale to access it remotely, but always route through a VPN
- Pair specific devices and block unauthorized access
Personal Reflection
When conversing with OpenClaw, I often feel like I'm raising a child—it forgets things sometimes. What works is consistently reinforcing correct behavior and context. Eventually, it learns and improves.

I'm still actively exploring OpenClaw's potential and looking for ways to organize my work while respecting company policies around data and automation.
